Rotary Youth Speaks 2011

Round 2

This year we hosted the second round of the Rotary Youth Speaks competition. It was held in the Council Chamber of the Surrey Heath Council. A most grand and impressive room. It certainly gives the competition a feel of importance and does, we hope, help the competitors to rise to the occasion. Six teams who had won their first round heats held earlier this year took part. As usual, the topics ranged far and wide:

- TECHNOLOGY OR THE BOOK? A TEEN DILEMMA (EPSOM COLLEGE)

- WHAT MAKES A HERO (HAWLEY PLACE SCHOOL)

- THE 21ST CENTURY TEENAGER IS BEING FORCED TO GROW UP TOO QUICKLY (ST GEORGE’S COLLEGE)

- FEMINISM (BLENHEIM SCHOOL)

- AIMING FOR AN A* IN 'TEENAGE STUDIES' (FARNBOROUGH SIXTH FORM COLLEGE)

- AND OTHER STORIES (ST GEORGE’S COLLEGE)

And, as usual, the standard of speaking was exceptional.

Our thanks go to the Council who allowed us to use their chamber for this event and to the Mayor of Surrey Heath, Councillor John May, who presented the certificates. And, most of all, our congratulations and thanks to all who took part in or gave their assistance in making this event such a success.

The Intermediate winning team came from Hawley Place School and their Speaker, Lydia Ball, won the title of Best Speaker in the Intermediate class.

The Senior winning team was from St. George’s College and, again, it was their speaker, Cameron Henderson Begg who was judged the Best Speaker in the Senior class
