Rotary Youth Speaks 2009

ONE OF THE CLOSEST COMPETITIONS TO DATE

The Rotary Club of Camberley “Youth Speaks” public speaking competition was held at the Surrey Heath Council Chambers in the presence of the Mayor of Surrey Heath and several Councillors. This annual event attracted teams from Collingwood College, Kings International College and Tomlinscote School and Sixth Form College to determine who should go forward to the District round of the competition.

The standard of presentation was extremely high and as ever the adjudication by Michael Willis, BA, MPP (Chief Executive of Surrey Heath Borough Council) and Sean McKnight, MA (Director of Studies at The Royal Military Academy) and chaired by Rotarian Dr Michael Tettenborn was superb.

The adjudicators faced an extremely challenging task distinguishing between five excellent teams who gave a wide range of presentations on subjects as diverse as the future of the Olympics, the problems of Social Networking internet sites, raising the school leaving age to 18, the issues of pressures on people to conform to a set physical image and the problems faced by individuals cultural expectations.

After their deliberations it was agreed that the overall winning team was Tomlinscote B with King’s International B as runners up. Both teams now go forward to the District round of the competition and, if successful, will progress to Regional and National finals later in the year.

The best Speaker was Ceri Symonds from Kings International.

Trophies and certificates to all competitors were presented by the Mayor of Surrey Heath, Councillor Alan Whittard, who spoke of a most enjoyable and entertaining evening, thanking all for taking part.
