After a hard fought contest the winners were declared as Tomlinscote School and Sixth Form College A team, speaking on the subject of “Debt”. Chairperson for the team was Sophie Catt, Speaker, Caitriona Egan and Proposer of the Vote of Thanks, Beth Brooks . Caitriona won the cup for the best speaker. Tomlinscote B team completed a very successful evening taking the runners up position with their talk “Global warming”. This team consisted of Chairperson, Kevin Patrick, Speaker, Nikki Howes and Proposer of the Vote of Thanks, Lisa Rix. Trophies and certificates to all competitors were presented by the Mayor of Surrey Heath, Pat Pearce, who spoke of a most enjoyable and entertaining evening, thanking all for taking part. Both teams now go forward to the District round of the competition to be held in Wimbledon during March. If successful, they will progress to Regional and National finals later in the year. Derek Dearmer, Club PRO, said “Once again, we saw a very high standard from these young people, who clearly had spent a lot of time in preparation to present speaking of such quality. In these days when all we read is criticism of our youngsters it is very rewarding to see the other side of the coin” Judges for the event were Rotarian, Brigadier Keith Hudson, CBE, M.Univ, (Chair), the new Chief Executive of Surrey Heath Borough Council, Michael Willis, BA, MPP and Sean McKnight, MA, Director of Studies at The Royal Military Academy. |
