The Rotary Club of Camberley

The Rotary Club of Camberley, founded in 1945, is open for membership to men and women in business, management or professional positions and who live or work within the borough or its immediate surroundings. It covers the Surrey Heath area and includes Camberley, Frimley, Bagshot and Lightwater. However, such is the high reputation of the club for the friendliness of its members, the enjoyment of its weekly meetings and for the considerable amount of service it provides to the local community, that many of its members come from places outside this immediate area, such as Farnham, Yateley and Sunningdale to name but a few.

The club was delighted that Their Royal Highnesses The Earl & Countess of Wessex accepted the invitation to become Honory Members of the club and they have shown considerable support and interest for the objectives of Rotary in general and the Camberley club in particular.

The Club meets weekly to either listen to a speaker or to plan and discuss the ongoing programme of help and fundraising.

The club has always taken great pride in the support that it gives to the local community. As an example, for the local schools we provide practice interviews for students to enable them to improve their interview techniques; an art competition to allow the students to display their work in the central library; the Youth Speaks public speaking competition held in the Town Hall council chamber.

Over the years the Rotary Club of Camberley has acted as the leader or catalyst for many innovations and local activities.

As examples, for the local community we have:

founded the Kingsclear Old Folks Home
formed the Camberley International Club
funded and provided the original Senior Citizens Tea Room in the town centre
chaired the Frimley Park Hospital Hydrotherapy Pool Appeal
provided equipment for the Ophthalmic Unit
initiated and helped fund the PATRIC patient resource and information centre in Frimley Park Hospital – the first such centre in the UK
renovated the playground equipment at the Frimley Children’s Centre

Internationally we have:

sponsored students in Ethiopia and Kenya
helped to provide clean water to the Dodoma region in Tanzania
provided shelter boxes to the casualties of natural disasters
provided Aqua boxes to those where clean water supply had been destroyed by natural disaster
provided shoe boxes full of toys and basic teaching aids to Europe, Africa, Asia and South America

And are proud to be associated with Rotary’s major international project, Polio Plus, which aims to eliminate Polio from the world in the near future

In the past twelve months we have:

Held practice interviews at all three local secondary schools for Sixth Form pupils
Funded two students on a Youth Leadership Scheme (RYLA)
Helped run Kids Out, a fun day for over 800 local children with special needs
